Product design in practice: Fixing broken customer experiences in existing products

Digital products that clear the startup product-market fit race usually come with all kinds of baggage — tech debt, product debt, promises and visions teams never followed-up on… These can create serious friction between your customers and your company. If left unchecked, this kind of product debt can lead to…

How I use design thinking foundations to write better articles

Writing about your work is one of the fundamental designer skills you should be working on. It will boost your network, create a strong personal brand or give employers a way to see how you think. Also most people really suck at it. For me, writing things isn’t like creating a beautiful painting. It’s like building a house. Start with strong foundations and build up. — In an excellent book ReWork, David H. Hansson & Jason Fried (founders of Basecamp) mention that when deciding who to hire they have them write something. Writing provides a huge boost to your communication skills. Getting your point across easier in emails, meetings or workshops is easier. I notice that…

Surface delight won’t help you build better products

“ Pleasant things work better. If you put plank on the ground — I can walk on it. It’s functional. But if you put it 300 feet in the air I’m not going near it. Fear paralyzes you. It changes the way you think.” — Don Norman Delight has been…

What we learned from redesigning the navigation of a headless CMS

When changing the navigation of your whole app, gut feeling is not enough to go on. As our product started to shift from a small startup into a robust, enterprise-ready tool, we needed to make sure our app structure was up to the challenge. …

Why are most products still so shit — design without the heart

How great experience is murdered by uninspired design every single day. — In 2013, Jeff Gothelf literally wrote a book on Lean UX. It was one of the first books that talked about integrating designers into agile, lean startup-like teams. It’s one of my favourite books and it impacted how I thought about the design for a long time. Unfortunately, the movement…

5 UX Books that’ll change how you think about design

There’s so many mediocre business, design or technology books. I’ve read a lot of different “designer” books (closing in on a hundred as I’m writing this). Most of them are really not that amazing. — Sadly, I can safely say a lot of the authors are just repeating the same basic mantra. Lean. Testing with users. Prototyping. Not wasting users’ time. Actually, very few books ever introduce anything really original or astonish me with a totally different worldview on what design really is.

How to master UI prototyping and spend less time working.

I don’t spend hours perfecting an interaction or getting that one icon just right. I never kill time moving pixels or vectors left and right or lose hours rewriting a copy on a button. I’m a design process freak. A few years ago, I learned about Lean manufacturing and since then I’ve been obsessed with eliminating waste in my daily design routine. This lead me to focus on the most important skill a designer can apply–prototyping.
